"Fiddle and Stomp All Night Long"      by Larry Morrisey

The first thing you notice when watching Jack Magee play is how he moves with his fiddle. If you are used to seeing a fiddler standing stock-still with eyes closed while playing, Magee's constant motion comes as a surprise. The old Mississippi tunes radiate out of his instrument and seem to settle into his body, causing him to grin, sway and pick up his feet for a quick shuffle. The Sound Wagon is an old-time dance band consisting of a fiddle, clawhammer banjo, guitar and upright bass.   The name was derived from the car that came to Mississippi in 1939 to record Mississippi fiddlers. A United States Army ambulance was acquired and equipped with a cot, cabinets for the recording machine, books, cloths, and canned goods.  It was called the Sound Wagon. It is a band that I put together when called to play for dances, gigs.   We want to spread old-time music.  When you're in the groove, the pocket, vortex or the feel with your musical friends, there is nothing like it in the world. Sharing this feeling with special friends for a weekend here and there tops the world.  Our intentions are to evoke a heavy dance rhythm.  We like to play close together, we are bound.  It mutes externe and when you can feel the energy coming from the circle,  it allows you to feel free with your expression with no inhibitions.  The music will climb to places that you haven't been to before.  When you're closest to the center of the sound, something happens. It propels your senses to wander around within the framework of the song.  You become overcome with this emotion. You have this feeling that anything you play will work, and you start playing whatever you feel at the time.  The shear of the sound wants to lift you from the ground.

But the family musical tradition comes through Jack's father's mother, born Ruby Kennedy...  READ MORE
